A few weeks ago I got an email from a customer who was frustrated. We had changed something and it disrupted their workflow. Understandable!
I proceeded to spend a solid 20 minutes sweating over a lengthy, heartfelt response. It was all hand-crafted (with no AI input!), and I thought it turned out pretty good!
But then came his reply: "Thanks for the ChatGPT response."
Well that sucked, and I hated it. I hate that we live in a world where we presume everything is probably written by AI (and, to be fair, an increasing share of it is). I also hate that I often look at a piece of writing and think, "Did you actually write this? Because if you didn't take the time to actually write this, why should I take the time to read it?"
So (and never say "never"!), I refuse to let AI write for me. I won't let it write emails, or text messages, or comments, or updates, or blog posts, or greeting cards, or anything else. If something is written, and it's attached to my name, I wrote it. I didn't get a head start with AI. I didn't let it rewrite portions. I didn't let it change my language. It's just me, warts and all.
I want people to know that if I write something to them then it's worth reading. Even if just simply because I, indeed, wrote it. It may be uninteresting, irrelevant, and nonsensical, but at least it's my uninterestingness, irrelevancy, and nonsense.
